Two local men were in critical condition after a Saturday night accident. At approximately 11 p.m. Saturday, emergency responders were called to the intersection of Ind. 30 and Silveus Crossing for a serious injury crash involving two passenger vehicles, according to a Warsaw Police Department press release. Units arrived to find both vehicles in the ditch at the northwest corner of the intersection. A 1998 Volkswagen Passat was sitting up against the traffic light pole with both occupants entrapped. The second vehicle, a 2004 Jeep Liberty, had crashed into the traffic signal control box, disabling the signals at the intersection. Warsaw Wayne Fire Territory extricated the occupants of the Volkswagen. The driver, 25-year-old Cody Rose, Etna Green, was transported by ambulance to Fort Wayne. The passenger of the Volkswagen, Ryan Scott, 23, Warsaw, was flown by Lutheran Air, which landed at the scene in the westbound lanes of Ind. 30. Both were in critical condition at Lutheran Hospital as of Sunday, the release states. This morning, a spokeswoman for the hospital said Scott was still in critical condition, but did not have an update available for Rose. The driver of the Jeep Liberty, 41-year-old Maria Luisa Ugalda-Rosas, Warsaw, refused any medical attention. She was transported by police to Kosciusko Community Hospital as standard protocol for toxicology testing for a driver involved in a serious injury crash. Toxicology results are pending for both drivers. Preliminary investigation indicates that the Jeep Liberty was westbound on Ind. 30 and had a green traffic signal when the Volkswagen, traveling northbound, pulled into the path of the Jeep Liberty. The crash remains under investigation. Rosas spoke little English and had to have an officer help translate. She told police that she was traveling west on Ind. 30 when she observed Rose’s vehicle cross her lane, according to the accident report. She was unable to avoid the collision, she said. The westbound lanes were completely closed for approximately one hour as the scene was investigated and the helicopter landed. One westbound lane was opened until the damaged vehicles could be removed. Indiana Department of Transportation worked throughout the night to restore the traffic signals. Warsaw Police were assisted by the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, Warsaw Wayne Fire Territory, Lutheran EMS Kosciusko, Lutheran Air and INDOT, the release states.
