PIERCETON - Two people are dead after a motorcycle was rear-ended Saturday on U.S. 30, west of CR 900E, near Pierceton.

Kevin K. Dunlap, 48, of South CR 475W, South Whitley, was ejected from the motorcycle upon impact. Dunlap suffered internal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the 2:09 p.m. accident. A passenger on the motorcycle, Susan D. Stevens, 43, of Cambridge City, suffered internal injuries and was airlifted to Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, where she later died.

According to a Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department report, Dunlap was eastbound on U.S. 30 and was slowing or stopping in the passing lane to make a right turn into a business when his motorcycle was struck from behind by a van driven by Philip D. Tucker, 49, of Anchorage Road, Warsaw.

Tucker and a passenger in his vehicle, Gwendolyn K. Tucker, 65, of Anchorage Road, Warsaw, complained of pain and were treated at Kosciusko Community Hospital.

A witness to the accident said Philip Tucker had pulled from the right lane of travel into the passing lane to go around a group of motorcycles when the accident occurred. Gwendolyn Tucker told police it appeared the motorcyclist missed his turn and had stopped in the driving portion of the roadway prior to the collision.

The witness also told police Dunlap nearly came to a complete stop prior to the accident.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident, which remains under investigation.

Damage to the vehicles is estimated at $10,000 to $25,000.

Assisting at the scene of the accident were personnel from Pierceton Fire Department and Pierceton and Multi-Township emergency medical services.
