Two Hurt In Sunday Crash

Posted

ATWOOD - Alcohol is believed to be a factor in an early Sunday accident near Atwood in which two men were injured.

According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, Angel Cruz, 25, of St. Mary's Drive, Warsaw, lost control of the car he was driving, crossed the center line and hit a tree.

Cruz suffered a burn to his face in the accident, which occurred about 4:02 a.m. on CR 200S, 800 feet east of CR 675W, near Atwood. A passenger in Cruz's car, Jose Vargas, 22, of North Broadway Street, Mentone, suffered a broken leg. Both men were semi-conscious at the scene, police reports indicate.

The impact in the accident was on the passenger side of Cruz's car and Vargas was trapped in the wreckage. After Vargas was extricated from the car, he was transported from the scene by helicopter ambulance to Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, where he was listed in serious condition this morning.

Kosciusko County Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine said this morning that a blood test was performed on Cruz, who is believed to have consumed alcohol prior to the accident. The results of the blood test were not available today.

Also assisting at the scene were personnel from Multi-Township and Mentone emergency medical services.
