PIERCETON - Two people suffered broken legs when the motorcycle they were riding rear-ended a car Sunday on Ind. 13 at CR 500E, near Pierceton.
Peter Moreland, 50, of Michigan City, was the driver of the motorcycle, and Alicia Ballard, 30, of Gary, was a passenger. Both were ejected from the motorcycle upon impact in the 2:22 p.m. accident. Each suffered one broken leg. Neither was wearing a helmet.
According to a Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department report, the driver of the car, Andrea J. Smith, 33, of Fort Wayne, was northbound on Ind. 13 and was stopped waiting for southbound traffic to clear so she could make a left-hand turn onto CR 500E.
Moreland rounded a curve and was unable to stop in time to avoid striking Smith's car from behind, according to a statement Ballard provided to police. Moreland was unable to make a statement due to his injuries, police said.
Moreland and Ballard were taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital for treatment.
Damage is estimated at $5,000 to $10,000.
The KCSD was assisted at the scene by personnel from Pierceton Fire Department and Pierceton Emergency Medical Service.
