Two Hurt In Boat Accident

Posted

Two people were injured Wednesday morning when the boat they were in rammed a seawall on Chapman Lake.

According to a spokesman with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources District 1 Headquarters in Syracuse, Larry Collins, 64, of Anderson, was videotaping his grandson tubing while at the same time operating a 15-foot motorboat.

At one point, Collins lost sight of his navigation and struck a seawall head-on, ejecting Collins from the boat, the spokesman said. Collins suffered facial fractures and a cut to his eye and his grandson, Zachary Collins, 5, of Norman, Okla., suffered a bruise to his leg.

The younger Collins was treated at Kosciusko Community Hospital and released, according to the DNR spokesman, and the elder Collins was treated at KCH before being transferred to Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, where he was listed in fair condition this morning.

Larry Collins was cited for not having an observer in the boat; Indiana law requires someone other than the boat operator to be in a boat when a skier or tuber is being pulled behind a watercraft.
