WINONA LAKE - Two Winona Lake men were arrested early Sunday morning after allegedly trying to pay for a pizza with counterfeit money.
Gary Lee Jones, 21, of 1202 Wooster Road, Winona Lake, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 2 a.m. Sunday for counterfeiting and check forgery. His bond was set at $5,000.Jones' roommate, James Lee Page, 25, was arrested at 4:29 a.m. Sunday and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail for forgery and counterfeiting. His bond was also set at $5,000.
According to the Winona Lake Police Department, Jones gave a counterfeit $100 bill to a pizza delivery driver to pay for pizza shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday.
The delivery person accepted the bill, but once he inspected it when he returned to the restaurant, he discovered the bill was fake. The incident was reported to the Warsaw Police Department, and WPD officers contacted Winona Lake officers to investigate the incident.
Officers went to Jones' residence and talked with Jones and Page.
Page reportedly told officers he received the bill from another man a few weeks before and suspected it was fake. Page also said he gave the bill to Jones to pay for the pizza earlier in the evening.
Jones reportedly admitted to police that he thought the bill was fake, but attempted to use it anyway. He was then taken into custody and booked into the jail.
Later, officers talked with Page again, and Page admitted to giving the fake bill to Jones to pay for the pizza. Police arrested Page for forgery and counterfeiting, and he was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail as well.
