Two Events Focus On Digitizing, Documenting Pierceton’s HistoryPIERCETON – There are two opportunities this weekend to help organizers build a digital history of Pierceton.

The project is being led by Joan Hostetler, a Pierceton native who is a historian and archivist in Indianapolis. She has been gathering the history of Pierceton since 2010 and plans to write an encyclopedia of Pierceton, an updated town history.

Representatives of the Whitko Community Digital Image Project will hold two scan-athons this weekend to copy local history photographs.

Former and current residents are asked to bring photographs of the Whitko community to the Pierceton Alumni Banquet at the Pierceton Elementary from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday or from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

An updated version of "Picturing Pierceton: Then & Now" will be presented at 2 p.m. Sunday

At the Sunday presentation, Hostetler will show dozens of the photos, particularly of the downtown commercial blocks, submitted by members of the digital image project.

It is hoped that older and longtime Pierceton residents will come and help identify all businesses ever located in downtown buildings.

Organizers are seeking photographs and documents from any era that spotlight houses, businesses, barns and everyday aspects of the community.

Hostetler and her husband, John Harris, encourage everyone to bring as many photos as possible related to Pierceton rather than just a select few.

All photos will be returned on the day of the event.

Participants are encouraged to write pencil captions on the back and place them in a folder with the name of the owner.

To arrange another time to share your documents with the project, contact Hostetler at 317-771-4129 or heritage photoservices@gmail.com.
