Two male Warsaw residents escaped from a house fire Thursday afternoon without injuries. The fire occurred at approximately 12:58 p.m. at 124 S. Sherman St., at the corner of Sherman and Market streets. A passerby called Central Dispatch to report the fire, according to Mike Brubaker, Warsaw-Wayne Township fire chief. The home is owned by John and Rita Brown, according to the Kosciusko County Beacon GIS system. There were two males who escaped the fire without injury, John Brown and another male subject, according to Brubaker. Brubaker said there was $30,000 in damage to the structure and $20,000 in content damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Sherman and Market streets were closed for approximately two hours until the fire was under control. “When we arrived there was smoke coming out of the eaves and the roof area. Fire crews got the fire knocked down and the flames were in a knee wall and then went into the attic,” Brubaker said. “When we arrived on scene, we asked the occupants to exit the structure and they did. One of the individuals was trying to put the fire out when we got there.” It took firefighters 45 minutes to get the fire under control, Brubaker said. Warsaw-Wayne Township Fire Territory and Winona Lake Fire Departments responded to the fire. Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, Warsaw Police Department and Multi-Township EMS also responded to the scene to assist firefighters. 1-800-Board Up was called to board up windows in the home. An Indiana American Water representative was called to shut the water off at the residence so pipes would not freeze. Kosciusko County Red Cross assisted the family at the scene. According to Kim Komdeur, Red Cross communications liaison, Red Cross volunteers assisted a family of 12 who were affected by the house fire. The family, which includes six children, received assistance with shelter, food, clothing, bedding and items for the baby. Komdeur added that anyone who would like to know more about how to help the family can call the Kosciusko Red Cross at 574-267-5244.
