Accidents at opposite ends of the county claimed two lives over the Labor Day holiday.
Clark A. Schieler, 29, of East Mock Road, Milford, was pronounced dead on arrival at Goshen General Hospital shortly after noon Monday.
Schieler's car was struck by a train at the Main Street crossing north of Railroad Street in Syracuse. The Syracuse Police Department said Schieler's vehicle was northbound on Main Street and was hit by the westbound engine at 11:52 a.m.
The train reportedly pushed Schieler's vehicle approximately 150 feet and down a small embankment.
The accident remains under investigation.
In a separate accident, Jonathan D. Snyder, 13, of Roann, died as a result of chest and head wounds after the car in which he was a passenger hit a tractor Monday afternoon on CR 300E, north of CR 1300S.
The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department reported that at approximately 4:41 p.m. Monday a car driven by Kurt M. Snyder, 40, was southbound on CR 300E when a tractor driven by Aaron Cook, 22, pulled into Snyder's path.
Cook later told police that the tractor, which was equipped with a front-end loader, had faulty brakes and would not stop.
Snyder's car hit the front-end loader of the tractor. Jonathan and Kurt Snyder were taken by ambulance to Wabash County Hospital, where Jonathan was pronounced dead. Kurt Snyder suffered broken ribs and was held for observation. He was released this morning.
Cook registered .09 percent for blood alcohol; the legal limit is .10 percent. The information was sent to the Kosciusko County Prosecutor's Office, which will determine whether to file charges.
The accident is under investigation. Responding to the accident were the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, the North Manchester Police Department, Chester Township Fire Department and jaws of life, Sidney Fire Department and Life Med Ambulance Service.
