Two Brothers Involved In Sunday’s Fatal CrashA 28-year-old Warsaw man was killed in an overnight crash Sunday after the vehicle he was riding in with his brother hit a tree and two houses.
Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office and multiple first responding agencies were called at 12:40 a.m. Sunday to North First Street, 100 feet north of Tulip Street, in Pierceton after a vehicle had crashed into a tree and two homes.
According to the crash report, upon arrival, police observed a tree down covering the entire roadway and a gray 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander SUV facing northbound on the east side of the roadway.
Police reported hearing someone shouting for help and then saw the driver of the SUV, Zacheriah E. Cain, 26, St. Mary’s Drive, Warsaw, standing outside of the vehicle near the passenger side.
The passenger, Zacheriah’s brother, Dontaye Y. Cain, 28, also of St. Mary’s Drive, Warsaw, was lying unconscious, trapped in the passenger seat, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the crash report, Zacheriah admitted to consuming alcohol prior to the crash, but denied consent to have his blood drawn. He was taken by ambulance to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne for non-life-threatening injuries.
The preliminary investigation determined the SUV had been traveling south on North First Street when the vehicle drove left of the center line into the northbound lane. The vehicle then struck a tree on the east side of the road and ran into two homes at 602 and 604 N. First St.
Both homes sustained interior and exterior damage.
Assisting agencies included KCSO, KCSO Fatal Team, Pierceton Police Department, Winona Lake Police Department, Pierceton Fire Department, Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory, Lutheran EMS and Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office.
