SYRACUSE – Two men were arrested Friday afternoon for allegedly breaking into a Syracuse home. The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department was called around 10:30 a.m. Friday to a Bayshore Drive home after the homeowner reported being awakened by a door being kicked in, according to sheriff’s department spokesman Sgt. Chad Hill. The homeowner told police he fought with two men inside the home in a scuffle, which potentially injured one with glass from a broken table, Hill said. The homeowner, who was not identified, told police he positively recognized one of the men, Hill said. A short time later, a man came to Kosciusko County Hospital with what he said was a stab wound to the chest suffered at a Syracuse restaurant. The man – identified as 21-year-old Stephen R. Legerwood, 5284 N. CR 850E, North Webster – was treated for the wounds, then taken into custody by police after authorities were called to the hospital to investigate. The man the homeowner identified to police – Chris B. Doty, 18, of 48 EMS D22 A Lane – was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail just before Legerwood. It was unclear where Doty was located. According to Hill, Doty and Legerwood each admitted to detectives during interviews to making up the stabbing story in an effort to conceal the alleged break-in. Legerwood and Doty are each preliminarily charged with felony burglary. Each are free after posting $10,000 bonds.
