DUNLAP -ÊTippecanoe Valley's Drew Shafer faced off against Warsaw's Brad Simmons in the first round of the individual tennis sectional at Concord Wednesday evening.
Simmons took the early lead, winning the first set 6-3. It looked as if Simmons would cruise to victory after he took a 5-3 lead in the second set, but Shafer rallied to tie the score at five.
Shafer won the second set 7-5 to force a tie-breaking set. Shafer then continued his rally through the third set. By winning the tie-breaker 6-2, Shafer won the sectional match.
"It was a very close and hard-fought match with Brad controlling the first half of the match and Drew the second half," said Valley coach Rod Hamman.
Shafer will continue his sectional run tonight when he faces Brad Weaver of Goshen. The match will take place at Concord High School at 5 p.m. If it rains, Shafer and Weaver will battle in the Elkhart Racquet Club.
