Editor, Times-Union: The revelation of truth in salaries is not a “brilliant political move” as has been stated in an earlier letter to this paper, rather it is exactly that – the revealing of truth. The exact reporting of public servants’ salaries is important especially at this time in our nation’s economy when there is little money to go around. I was not at the event where the salary question was raised, but I appreciate that that question was asked because we need to know such facts. Such a question only asks for the transparency that we as citizens deserve from our elected officials. Thank you to Kent Adams for pointing out the truth of the current Winona Lake Clerk-Treasurer Retha Hicks’ salary. I also want to say thank you to our current town council members - all of them - not just a few hand-picked ones. They are all public servants and all of them deserve our respect and gratitude. I appreciate the transparency of our current town council. While I have never had the privilege of attending a town council meeting, I have often read about them in the paper the following day and it is very apparent that they are listening to the people of this fine town and want to hear the voice of the citizens. I also think it was a very wise decision in their last meeting not to vote on the community garden as not all the council members were present and this is a subject that affects the entire community. This is not what I call a political decision, but a wise decision. I applaud our current town council and thank them for their service to our community and for listening to the voice of the people. Keep up this kind of dedication to your community. If we are all dedicated to each other as fellow citizens (even though we will have differences) and remain dedicated to the democratic process this community will continue to thrive. Thank you.
