MILFORD - Milford Town Marshal David Hobbs is recovering from injuries suffered in a serious motorcycle accident Saturday.

Hobbs, 50, has been Milford marshal since June 1978.

The accident occurred at 4:30 Saturday afternoon at the intersection of Armstrong Road and CR 350E, near Oswego. Hobbs was off duty at the time of the accident.

He is listed in fair condition at Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne.

According to reports from his daughter, Melanie Hobbs, David has undergone three surgeries. He suffered injuries including a broken pelvis on both sides and numerous breaks to his left leg and foot. Melanie said doctors used rods, plates and pins to repair the injuries.

Hobbs also suffered a bruised spleen, which, Melanie said, is doing well, but he did develop pneumonia. Melanie said doctors expect to use skin grafts on Hobbs' ankle.

According to his daughter, Hobbs has medical insurance but has no means of income while he recovers from the accident.

His family asked that in lieu of flowers or balloons, well-wishers make a donation to the David Hobbs Trust Fund at First National Bank in Milford.

Hobbs is expected to be out of the marshal's job for at least three months while he recovers. Deputy marshal Lee Mediano is the acting town marshal.

Police report the accident occurred when Benjamin Gates, 18, Warsaw, was driving eastbound on Armstrong Road and stopped his pickup to wait to turn north onto CR 350E. He told police he let several motorcycles pass him headed west and then he started to turn.

When Gates was turning, he apparently did not see Hobbs' motorcycle until Hobbs struck the side of the pickup.

Hobbs was apparently driving west when he hit the pickup and was thrown more than 30 feet in the air.

Gates' truck also hit a pickup driven by Charles C. Sherwood, North Webster, that was sitting on CR 350E.

Hobbs was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital then transferred to Parkview.
