I heard a commentator on TV the other day describe the coronavirus as Trump's Katrina. In a way, it is.
I remember when President Bush went down to Louisiana before Hurricane Katrina hit the state that he warned the mayor of New Orleans to evacuate the citizens of his city. He didn't. He got the nickname "school bus" Nagin because all the school busses that could have been used to evacuate thousands of people were left to be flooded by the flood waters that entered the city because New Orleans wasn't prepared for the storm swell that overwhelmed the levees. Money that was supposed to be used to prepare for a hurricane like Katrina was diverted to be used to build fountains and monuments. Over 1,000 people died because the busses weren't used and fountains were more important than their safety was. So people shouldn't blame Bush for the tragedy because he tried to prevent it.
When Trump was much younger during the 1990s he warned against being economically tied to China. President Nixon had gone to China to meet with Mao and helped open the nation to trade with the United States and better relations. Capitalism helped make China the second most powerful economic force in the world. But Donald Trump was concerned that if this nation became too dependent on Chinese trade that it would someday hurt us. He was proven right.
Democrats were up in arms over the tariffs that Trump imposed on goods coming from China. It was fine if they imposed tariffs on what we sent them which made us less competitive. But Trump didn't like that. So far his strategy is working. And the industrial jobs Obama said Trump would need a magic wand to bring back to the U.S. are coming back. If it had been up to a President Hillary Clinton, China would still be closed to American exports and factories that have been opened because of Trump's economic policies wouldn't have even reached the planning stage yet.
COVID 19 made a tremendous hit against the stock market. Democrats are probably worried that the virus came a bit too early to defeat Trump because if a vaccine in developed before the middle of the summer, the stock market will recover the losses it has experienced and be stronger than ever before November.
The Democrats complained when Trump wanted to stop air travel from China to prevent infected people from coming to America. Trump was again proven correct. Trump wanted to get ahead of the virus while Democrats thought it was more important to impeach Trump for no good reason. Trump acted faster than Obama when the former President allowed over 1,000 people to die from swine flu before declaring it an emergency.
If Trump warns against voting for Biden in November, heed his warning. He has been right for years.
