PERU – Two Akron men were killed Wednesday morning when their pickup truck was struck by a Mack truck hauling concrete bricks.

The Journal Gazette reports Indiana State Police and Miami County Sheriff's Department officers were called to U.S. 24 at Ind. 19 about 11:15 a.m. Once there, they found the pickup's driver, James R. Winters, 76, and his passenger, Robert T. Benzing, 21, both of Akron, had been killed by the impact.

Their 2005 Chevrolet Colorado truck, which had been turning west onto U.S. 24, was struck on the passenger's side by the 1994 Mack flatbed truck going west on U.S. 24, state police at Peru said. The driver, David Carter, 38, of Monticello, was not injured.

Everyone in the crash was wearing a seat belt, but state police said the impact was too severe for the restraints to save Benzing and Winters.

Carter was driving for Carter Concrete Block Inc., based in Logansport, state police said.

The crash remains under investigation.
