An Indiana State police trooper will be honored by the Fourth Annual TOP COPS Awards.
The National Association of Police Organizations announced that Trooper Thomas K. Littlefield, Warsaw, is the honorable mention award winner and will be attending the TOP COPS Awards Ceremony at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C., today.
The TOP COPS Awards pay tribute to law enforcement officers from across the country for outstanding service to their communities during the preceding year. The TOP COPS were nominated by fellow officers and selected from hundreds of nominations by an awards committee. TOP COPS have been chosen from each state for an honorable mention award and officers from the top 10 cases have been chosen as the 1997 TOP COPS.
Littlefield is being honored for bravery in a March 12, 1996, incident. He saved the life of a truck driver involved in a fiery crash.
Littlefield attempted to rescue a driver trapped in a burning car after a fiery car-semi crash on U.S. 30 near CR 350W, Warsaw. Littlefield could not get to the driver because of the flames.
Littlefield then attended to the semi driver, who was lying in diesel fuel surrounded by burning grass. One of the vehicle's gas tanks exploded and burning debris was thrown on the semi driver and Littlefield.
Littlefield was treated at Kosciusko Community Hospital for burns to his neck and ear.
He was also presented the Indiana State Police Gold Star Award for Valor in 1996 for extraordinary heroism above and beyond the call of duty.
