MENTONE - When the Rochester, Tippecanoe Valley and Triton boys and girls cross country teams met at Valley High School Tuesday, the two separate meets were as different as could possibly be.
In the girls meet, it was impossible to predict the outcome of the meet until the final scores were totaled. Rochester's score of 39 was just one point better than Valley's 40, which was just a single point better than Triton's 41.
On the other hand, in the boys meet, Triton was an easy winner, taking the top three spots and 12 of the top 16 overall. The Trojans wound up with a 23, while Rochester placed second with a 34. Valley ended a distant third with 81.
The Trojans' Shelly Miller defeated one of the top runners in the area in Rochester's Jaymi Hartzler surprisingly easy. For most of the race, Miller and Hartzler ran stride-by-stride. But over the final quarter of the course, Miller took off and beat her opponent by 25 seconds. Triton's Reghan Kreft grabbed third place, more than a full minute behind Miller.
Although Valley's top runner, Sarah Kindig, placed just fifth, the Vikings took second place because of fifth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 11th place finishes.
In boys action, Triton's Mason McIntyre was pushed by only teammates as he ran the course in a strong 17:05. Nate Gephart came in 10 seconds later and Wes Rettinger took third, more than a minute behind McIntyre.
Rochester then took the next four spots, but Triton showed team strength by taking every spot between eighth and 12th.
Triton and Valley will compete in the New Prairie Invitational Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
