Triton's Loss To South Central Headlines Local Roundup

HAMLET – Triton’s varsity girls basketball season came to an end Friday night in the semifinal round of arguably the toughest Class 1A sectional in the state. In an Oregon-Davis Sectional that featured four top-10 teams, No. 7 Triton fell 40-34 to No. 4 South Central. In Friday’s other semifinal, No. 6 Oregon-Davis, the defending state champion, beat LaCrosse 53-40. South Central (20-5) will meet Oregon-Davis (16-7) in tonight’s sectional final. Oregon-Davis is looking for its fourth-straight sectional championship and eighth in nine years. South Central won the program’s only sectional title in 2005. In the six-point loss, Triton trailed 28-18 at halftime but worked its way back into the game by holding South Central scoreless in the third quarter and cutting the deficit to 28-22. The Lady Trojans were only 4 of 13 from the free throw line in the loss. Becca Kennedy led Triton with 14 points, while Kylie Mason and Jaela Meister chipped in with nine points each. Hannah Jennings rounded out the Lady Trojans’ scoring with two points. Riley Popplewell led South Central with a game-high 17 points, while Olivia Tolman chipped in with seven points and Hannah Stolte and Hannah Howell scored five points each. Alexandria Minix led Oregon-Davis to its win by scoring 24 points, while teammate Taylor Kranenburg added 14 points. Justene Charlesworth led LaCrosse with 20 points.

GIRLS SWIMMING Friday in Indianapolis A trio of local swimmers advanced to the final round of the IHSAA girls state finals today at IUPUI’s Natatorium. The top 16 individuals from each event advanced to today’s round. In the 50 freestyle, Warsaw sophomore Brenna Morgan swam a time of 24.01 seconds to advance. Wawasee sophomore Paige Miller qualified for today’s finals with a time of 5:02.36. Breanna Robinson, a senior at Wawasee, qualified in two events. She swam a time of 54.64 second Friday’s preliminary round of the 100 butterfly and also swam a time of 55.86 in the 100 backstroke.
