HAMLET - Defense proved to be the best offense Tuesday for Triton's varsity girls basketball team.
Defeating Westville 46-17 in the opening round of Sectional 50 at Oregon-Davis High School, the Trojans never allowed the opposition to score more than seven points in a quarter. That defensive effort was most noticeable when Westville was shut out in the second quarter.Holding Westville to just 9 percent shooting for the game (4-for-43), Triton outscored the overmatched team 30-10 in the second half, affording Trojan coach Paul Walker to clear his bench in a sectional win.
Prior to clearing the bench, junior Paige Davis led the Trojans with 10 points and four assists. Bethany Shively led the team from Bourbon with six rebounds, while senior Jessica Ganshorn finished the contest with seven points, two rebounds and two assists.
With the win, Triton advanced to pay No. 1 Oregon-Davis in Friday's 6 p.m. semifinal.
In their previous meeting, on Nov. 10, the defending state champs hosted and defeated Triton 67-32.
