Triton High School’s girls golf team had the two lowest individual scores at Monday’s three-team meet at Rozella Ford Golf Club, but couldn’t beat North Miami. The North Miami Lady Warriors (2-0) shot a 212 on the course’s par-35 front nine, while the Lady Trojans (1-2) finished with a 221 and the Whitko Lady Wildcats (0-4) posted a 244. Triton junior Hannah Jennings and senior Lizzy Erne shared medalist honors by shooting 47s. According to Triton coach Jack Carpenter, Jennings has a stronghold on the No. 1 position, but her short game is holding her back. “Hannah’s the better player,” Carpenter said. “Her long game is good now, but her short game isn’t where it needs to be – and she’d admit that. Three putts are something you can’t have.” Along with Jennings’ and Erne’s scores, Triton junior Lillie Berger posted a 60, sophomore Kayla Kreft shot a 67 and senior Courtney Zentz rounded out the scoring with a 69. Each of the five Lady Trojans were on the team last year, but because of their lack of playing time over the summer, Carpenter’s squad seems to be starting over. “We’ve only had about four practices,” he said. “The thing now is their lack of time on the course. In practice, you can work for two-and-a-half hours, but that’s not going to make that much of a difference. They really need to be playing on their own time too.” Whitko coach Bryan Sprunger had hoped his team would shoot below 235, a score it shot at Syracuse’s South Shore Golf Club Thursday, but that didn’t happen at Rozella Ford. “Well, this course is a little tougher,” he said. “We’re just going to have to keep working at it (today) at Southern Wells.” The Lady Wildcats were led by junior April Bishop’s 56, followed by 62s from freshman Aurelia Stephens and junior Elizabeth Gensch, junior Samantha Shell’s 64 and freshman Kennedy Krull’s 68. Following today’s match at Southern Wells, Whitko returns to South Shore Saturday for the Wawasee Invitational. For Triton, its off until Monday, when it opens the Northern State Conference portion of its schedule against John Glenn at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth.
