BOURBON - Despite the fact that his team scored more points in the first quarter than Argos did the entire game in Tuesday's sectional, Triton girls basketball coach Mark Heeter called a time out with just over a minute gone in the third quarter to make some adjustments.
"I told them we're not going to play like this," said Heeter. "We let them score four points in a minute after they only scored four in the first 16 minutes. I don't care what the score is we're not going to play like that."
After trailing 31-4 at halftime, Argos went on a 4-0 run in the first minute of the third quarter to cut the lead to 31-8. Triton responded with an 11-2 run to finish the quarter, as the Trojans went on to win 59-14.
Triton mauled Argos 74-16 in the second game of the season.
The Trojans beat Argos in nearly every facet of the game last night, but Heeter wasn't completely satisfied.
"I thought we played well in the first quarter," said Heeter. "But we didn't look real sharp. Our defense was good. I just thought we looked sluggish and didn't get the ball out and run."
The biggest thing Heeter said his team didn't do was connect on its free throws.
"I was extremely disapointed with our free throws tonight," said Heeter.
The Trojans, who shot 25 of 53 (45.3 percent) from the field, made good on just 8 of 22 (36.4 percent) attempts from the charity stripe.
When Heeter spoke of the first quarter he spoke of a quarter where his team outscored the Dragons 18-0.
The Trojans led 21-0, a football score, before sophomore Carrie Andrews made good on the second of two free throws to put Argos on the board and cut the deficit to 20. The Dragons scored three more points in the quarter, a free throw by Amanda Wagers, and a field goal by Nicole Avery.
Avery led the Dragons in the scoring column with four points. Andrews chipped in with three, while three others added two points.
Triton was led in scoring by junior Betsy Salyer's 16 points. Salyer also pulled down 12 rebounds and made two steals. Freshmen Ashli Senff was 7 of 7 from the field, including a three pointer, to finish with 15 points. Missy Nifong and Brandi Ganshorn added seven points apiece. Nifong, Triton's lone senior, also pulled crashed the boards for nine caroms and made six steals.
The 45-point win improves Triton's overall season record to 14-7. Argos finishes its season at 5-15.
Triton led 42-10 after three quarters of play, before outscoring the Dragons 17-4 in the final frame.
Triton will play 7-14 Culver Thursday at 7:30. The Cavaliers advanced to the semifinal round by defeating 3-17 LaCrosse 59-41.
