Triton To Buy Buses

Posted

BOURBON - School buses were the topic of discussion Monday at Triton's school board meeting.

From drivers to garages to the actual vehicles, buses dominated the agenda.

The board unanimously approved recommendations by the school's transportation director, Kris Berger, for the purchase of two new buses. One 66-passenger bus will be purchased from TriState Bus Sales and one 14-passenger bus from Kerlin Bus Sales and Leasing.

The cost of these vehicles combined will be more than $90,000.

"The purchase of new buses will not strain the schools' budget," superintendent Ted Chittum said. "Last summer the budget was built in anticipation of purchasing one new 66-passenger and one new activities bus."

On other bus-related notes:

• Chittum informed the board of a humidity problem in the school's bus barn. Minimal amounts of heating and insulation have kept the building damp all winter and could lead to mold if not addressed soon.

A combination of approaches will be used to solve the problem and will probably include installing an air circulation system, better heating and more insulation.

• James A. Bates was unanimously approved as a substitute bus driver. Bates is a former Triton bus driver.

In other business, the board:

• Approved a curriculum change that will affect the graduating class of 2006. The board voted unanimously on the addition of "computer applications" to the business department's required courses.

The change will go into effect next year and will give students experience in spreadsheet, database and desktop publishing software.

• Commended teachers, parents, students and administrators for improved ISTEP scores.

This year's scores are higher than in recent years, though they should not necessarily be compared to past scores. The test's content and scoring has been changed in accordance with Indiana Academic Standards for English and mathematics.

• Approved the 2003-04 academic calendar.

• Voted in favor of the seventh annual overnight field trip to Camp Amigo for fifth-graders.

• Announced the school's intent to apply for the "Reading First" grant. The grant will provide funding for reading materials and programs for the school system, focusing mainly on kindergarten through third grade.

The next public meeting is scheduled for March 17.

Triton school board members are: president Kevin Boyce, vice president Steve Feldman, secretary/treasurer Larry Lemler and Dave Shively. Corporation treasurer is Janet Barker. Superintendent is Ted Chittum.
