Posted

LARWILL -ÊThe weather could not have been more perfect for tennis. A light breeze. Mild temperatures. Sun shining.

And the Triton girls tennis team took advantage of it against Whitko Wednesday evening. The Trojans downed the Wildcats 5-0 with two matches going into a third set.

At the No. 1 singles position, Triton's Jenny Berger came from behind to defeat Whitko's Stacie Warner 7-5, 6-2. Warner was up 5-2 in the first set when Berger scored five straight points to win the set. After falling behind 1-0 in the second set, Berger went to work again to win 6-2.

"I was pleased to see our No. 1 singles player come from behind and get the win in two sets," said Triton coach Laura Lamaster.

The No. 2 singles match was the first to go to three sets. Whitko's Brooke Workman won the first set 7-5, and then Triton's Angela Wilcox won the second set 6-1. In the third set, Wilcox took a 4-1 lead and then won the set 6-1.

"Our No. 2 singles player was a lot more aggressive tonight," said Lamaster. "She was up on the net more and much more aggressive."

In the longest match of the night, Trojan Lena Miller and Wildcat Emily Crist went to three sets. Miller took the first set 7-5, and Crist took the second 6-4. Nearly three hours after the match began, Miller won the third set 6-2 to get another Triton point.

Both of Triton's doubles teams picked up wins against Whitko as well. At the No. 1 slot, Crystal Lamaster teamed up with Kelly Whiteman to defeat Hilari Ayers and Chelsey Grant in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.

Then Triton's No. 2 doubles team of Tiffany Warner and Brittany Zeider joined forces to defeat Whitko's Brandy Bayles and Jodi Frantz. After winning the first set 6-3, Warner and Zeider outlasted Bayles and Frantz 7-5 in the second set.

"The girls did well," said Lamaster. "I was pleased with our performance. We had a couple three-setters and close matches. Of course, I wish we had not gone into a third set, but I was pleased that we could come back to pull it out."

The win makes Triton 5-1 on the season. Whitko is 2-6 overall. The Trojans play at Jimtown tonight, while the Wildcats travel to Westview for a match tonight.
