BOURBON - Triton's technology team competed in the IMSTEA Super Mileage Contest April 24.
Teams from 39 schools entered 51 cars in this year's event. Every team near Triton's in the pit area had trouble.
The contest includes getting three segments of 10 laps, each around the 5/8-mile track at O'Reilly Raceway Park. The segments started on half-hour increments.
Triton's stock car, which is powered by a stock and sealed Briggs and Stratton engine, ran 19 laps until the engine broke. Triton then borrowed an engine from the Warsaw team. Triton tried another three runs with parts that thrashed between each try, but never completed another run.
Triton's second car had a similar day. Triton started the day with two straight qualifying runs. On the third try the drive gears stripped out. This has never happened in other years or practice. Triton's team tried its spare pieces and they stripped out as well. Triton borrowed pieces, but still could not keep the chain in place. The contest was won by Greenfield Central in the stock class with 847 miles per gallon, and Evansville Mater Dei with 1,004 mpg in the unlimited class. Warsaw won the Sportsmanship award.
