BOURBON – Triton’s girls tennis team remained undefeated in dual meets with a 5-0 win over visiting Whitko Tuesday evening. While neither doubles match was close, with Emma Ross and Hannah Wanemacher needing just 27 minutes to win in 12 straight games, the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches were closely contested. At, No. 1, Triton’s Shayla May and Whitko’s Morgan Keirn played a back-and-forth match that saw both players get stronger as the match wore on. Almost every point had to be earned, whether by forcing a mistake or setting up a solid passing shot. May eventually pulled away for the 6-4, 6-2 win. Kolbie Mason and Delaney Keirn, Morgan’s twin sister, played a similar but closer match, with Mason pulling out a 6-4, 7-5 win. “Both one and two singles could have gone three sets easily,” Triton head coach Allen Peckham said. “Both Shayla and Kolbie have spent a lot of time at the racquet club, and they’ve seen (the Keirn sisters) and know a little bit about them. So we knew those two matches would be tough.” Whitko head coach Victoria Cornell agreed with the assessment. “Both No. 1 singles players were very solid, and neither wanted to give up,” she said. “It was Morgan’s first loss this season; she’s played well so far this year, and even though she lost, she played well today. “Morgan and Delaney are very similar players. Both can really grind out a match, and neither will give an inch.” In the No. 3 singles match, Quinn Downing won 6-1, 6-1 over Jackie Werstler, and in the No. 2 doubles match Tatum Thompson and Megan McFarland won 6-2, 6-2 over Lily Owsley and Brook Prater. Whitko returns to action at Three Rivers Conference foe Rochester Thursday. Triton returns to Hoosier North Athletic Conference play when LaVille comes to town today.
