BOURBON – A Triton student is in custody after making threats on social media.
No further information on the juvenile was released this morning.
Triton School Corp. Superintendent Jerry Riffle kept the corporation abreast of the situation through posts on Triton’s Facebook page and through school messenger, he said in a telephone interview this morning.
Riffle said the original social media threat was posted at about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday and he learned of it within five minutes. The Snapchat post threatened the school corporation and the Bourbon community. Law enforcement was contacted.
Riffle said the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, Bourbon Police Department, Indiana State Police and the Cyber Crimes Unit all were involved.
Shortly after midnight on Thursday morning, a local telephone and internet provider provided authorities with an IP address and phone number of the suspect, according to the Triton School Corp. Facebook page early today.
A search warrant was issued at about 1:32 a.m. today. The student was taken into police custody and admitted his role within hours.
Riffle said staff were updated on this situation this morning, but declined to further elaborate on who the Triton student was since it was a juvenile. The Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office also declined to provide further information.
In his last Facebook post this morning, Riffle wrote, “I am truly happy to announce that the individual who caused so much concern yesterday is now in police custody. We will continue to have law enforcement on site today to ensure that all measures are taken to keep our students safe. I appreciate most everyone's patience and greatly appreciate those who gave of their time and talents all night to make this morning a safer morning in our community and school.”
