In "The Music Man", the show starts on the morning of July 4, 1912. A railroad conductor announces the next stop will be River City, Iowa. In the train is a coach filled with traveling salesmen, rhythmically talking about what it takes to sell merchandise in the modern world.
Among the things the salesmen talk about is Professor Harold Hill (Thom Eiser), who they think is ruining the reputation of all traveling salesmen. They don't realize Hill is among them.
Hill moves from town to town selling musical instruments, uniforms and the promise of lessons for a boys' band, but Hill always leaves town with the money before being found out.
Hill meets an old friend and one-time partner, Marcellus Washburn (Jacob Stouder). Washburn has given up his old ways and settled down in River City to work in the livery stable. After Hill explains his plans, Washburn warns him to watch out for the town's music teacher and librarian, Marian Paroo (Adrienne Utter) as she'd expose Harold's con on the spot.
The town has just got its first pool table. Hill begins telling the townspeople about the trouble the pool table will bring, planning to use that as a means to convince the town a boys' band will keep the young ones out of trouble.
Hill and Utter eventually meet, but it's not love at first sight.
That's just the beginning of the going-ons in River City when Hill arrives and begins his con.
