BOURBON - The Triton School Board Monday approved the hiring of several people.

Among the new hires was Susan Mullin, of Plymouth, for a new full-time certified Title I position. Mullin's job will include working with students, parents, teachers and community members to promote the Reading First initiative in first through third grades. Mullin will also work with the English as a Second Language and Bridges programs.

Mullin said she is excited to begin work in her new position. "I've always been a teacher at heart and this became available to me and I'm eager to meet the challenges," she said.

Other personnel hires were Jeri Bucher as varsity cheerleading sponsor, Douglass Kimes as junior high football coach, Allen Peckham as assistant varsity boys tennis coach, Steven Boyer as junior high assistant football coach and Layne Leeper as assistant varsity football coach.

The board also approved an amendment to the school corporation's policy concerning substitute teachers. The amendment raises pay for substitutes from $55 per day to $60 per day. School superintendent Ted Chittum said the purpose of the raise is to keep pace with the pay rate of other area school systems.

"It's just something we need to do to stay competitive," he said.

The board approved a resolution to sell a 15-passenger van to the Bourbon Senior Center for $1. Chittum told the board, by next summer, vans will be banned as student transportation due to state safety codes. He said the towns of Bourbon and Etna Green regularly help out the school corporation with parking lot maintenance and lighting and the virtual donation of the van was a way to give back. "If we can help each other out on things like this, I think it's the way to go," Chittum said.
