BOURBON - Christine Cook is Triton Community School's new Cognitive Coach, the board decided at Monday's meeting.
Cognitive coaching, developed by Dr. Art Costa, is a peer-coaching system intended to facilitate a teacher's classroom instruction by offering positive feedback and focusing on "the payoff" of classroom activities, rather than the activity itself.
Triton is required to hire a cognitive coach for grades 1-3 as part of its Reading First grant.
Cook, a former first and sixth grade teacher in the corporation, will begin training next year.
Tom Bowers, Triton Elementary School principal, said that Cook especially is qualified for this position because of her hard work as co-chair of Triton's "Writing Goal" team and because of her strong background which includes a writing minor.
In other business, the board:
Adopted Policy No. 662 regarding student drug testing. The policy goes into effect for the 2003-2004 school year. It requires all student athletes, drivers and extracurricular activity participants to undergo random drug and alcohol testing.
Approved prices for student textbook rentals for the 2003-2004 school year. Overall, book prices declined.
