Triton Girls Win Season Opener

Posted
BOURBON – The Triton girls basketball program seems to have bucked a trend against the North Judson Lady Bluejays.
After losing 10-straight meeting to Judson (0-1), the Class 1A No. 7 Triton Lady Trojans (1-0) have now won three straight, their latest being a 61-44 blowout Friday in the Trojan Trench.
“That was a pretty good first game for us,” Triton coach Adam Heckaman said. “I think we showed we can play a little bit.”
Led by senior Shana Anderson’s 18 points, sophomore Kylie Mason’s 16 and junior Taylor Hatfield’s 12, the final score was actually closer than the game seemed, as Triton led 53-25 late in the third quarter.
“They all three can shoot, they all three can score,” Heckaman said about his leading scorers. “(Junior) Mallorie (Jennings) can also step up and score and (sophomore) Krystal (Sellers is) going to get points. (Senior Bre (Lemler) is also going to pick up points. Night in and night out, points are going to be spread around. Those three will be pretty consistent with their scoring and the others will pick up what’s left.”
Sellers did pick up some of the other points, garnering eight to go with her four rebounds, four assists and two steals, but she wasn’t the only Lady Trojan filling out the stat sheet.
Along with her game-high 18 points, Anderson also had a game-high eight rebounds and two steals, while Mason had four rebounds, four assists and three steals and Hatfield finished with six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Also for Triton, Lemler led the team with seven steals, as the team had 22 in the game, offsetting its lack of size.
“We’re not big by any means,” Heckaman said. “We have to get out and put pressure on teams.”
Judson did outrebound Triton 38-29, but the 22 steals helped the Lady Trojans overcome that for the easy win.
Up next for Triton is a battle of top 10 teams in Class 1A, as it travels to No. 10 Argos Tuesday.
“Argos is going to be a great game,” Heckaman said. “It’s a rivalry game. It’s just down the road in Argos. Coach (Gary) Teel is going to have that team playing well. They played really well against (John) Glenn (Thursday in a 59-52 win). It will be a good game.”
