BOURBON — The rivalry between the Oregon-Davis and Triton girls basketball teams continued Wednesday night in Bourbon. Coming in at No. 2 in Class 1A, the Oregon-Davis Lady Bobcats (11-3) won the latest meeting, downing the Class 1A No. 9 Triton Lady Trojans (8-4) by a score of 65-55. “Every time we play Triton, it’s going to be a 10-point or less (game), either way,” O-D coach Terry Minix said. “If we play each other 100 times, we’d play split 50-50,” he added. Minix may be a bit modest, as his Lady Bobcats are 8-2 against Triton in their last 10 meetings, with both losses coming in the 2010-11 season. That season, O-D was starting three freshmen that have grown into solid players, led by Ashley Campbell. Now a junior, Campbell was a tough matchup for the Lady Trojans, tallying 25 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals in the win. “This is one of the best all-around games I’ve seen her play,” Minix said. “She’s a tough matchup for anybody. She can knock down a 3, she can penetrate on you and she’s got passes no one usually sees – and sometimes our kids don’t see them.” Juniors Jessica Avarone and Alicia McIntosh have also been starting since they were freshmen, and each scored nine Wednesday night, with McIntosh also posting six steals. However, outside of Campbell, junior Haley Collings was Triton’s biggest problem, as she scored 13 points but had 19 rebounds, 12 of which were on the offensive glass. “Haley Collings did a great job on the boards,” Minix said. “She missed some easy putbacks, but for the most part, she did a great job.” Eight of her rebounds came in the third quarter, when O-D transformed its 31-29 halftime lead into one that reached 42-32 with 3:23 remaining. With Collings controlling the boards, O-D responded to a second half-opening three-pointer by Triton senior Shana Anderson with an 11-0 run that built the 10-point lead. The slow start to the second half mimicked Triton’s first quarter, when it began the game with a trey from junior Taylor Hatfield, but was outscored 7-0 over the next two minutes and committed turnovers on seven-straight possessions. “They do a good job of forcing some things that teams don’t usually do,” Triton coach Adam Heckaman said. “They put a lot of pressure on you. We made some mistakes. We made some mental mistakes early on against their press. We didn’t cut to spots we should have – we didn’t handle it. Then, we settled down and handled it fine and even got them to go out of it. But then, we made some of the same mental mistakes in the second half.” In the first half, junior Kylie Mason was able to keep Triton in the game, connecting on 4 of 6 three-point attempts, but she had to sit out the final 2:52 of the half with three fouls. Mason went on to score 19 points, making 5 of 10 treys, before fouling out with a minute to play. “When you leave Kylie Mason open, she’s going to knock them down,” Minix said. “That’s what we talked about at halftime. You have to get out on her.” O-D did slow Mason in the second half, but Anderson picked up some of the slack, scoring 10 of her 13 points in the second half, but Triton could only get as close as six. “Campbell’s great, Avarone is great and McIntosh is a great player on the perimeter,” Heckaman said of O-D. “Collings has come a long way. She rebounds well, she’s long, she’s athletic.” The two teams could potentially meet in the annual TCU Bi-County Tournament, which begins Jan. 15, then may match up again in Sectional 51 at Oregon-Davis, which would be the seventh-straight time that’s happened. “It’s become a rivalry,” Heckaman said. “When you play a team, potentially, three times in a year and you battle it out like we have the past two years, it becomes a pretty big rivalry. It’s a game I know the girls get up for. Tonight’s game, we have to learn from it, because each time we play them it’s more important.” Up next for the Lady Trojans is a Northern State Conference home game against John Glenn Friday night.
