Triton Freshman Ties For 14th At State Finals

Posted
FRANKLIN - Befitting of his last name, Triton's Quentyn Carpenter carved his way to a top-15 finish in the 74th annual boys golf state finals at Legends of Indiana in Franklin.

The talented freshman shot a 1-over par 71 on Tuesday and a 72 on Wednesday, leaving him in a tie for 14th place with a two-day total of 143.Carpenter finished in a tie with Evansville North freshman Trey Brinker, who shot a 76 and a 67 for his 36-hole total of 143.

Carpenter and Brinker were the only freshman to finish in the top 15.

The top nine teams from Tuesday's first round advanced to Wednesday's final round.

Also advancing were the top nine individuals not on an advancing team, as well as any individual within four strokes of the leader.

Carpenter's 71 on Tuesday was the final advancing spot for an individual.

"We weren't sure a 71 would get him out," said Triton coach Jack Carpenter, Quentyn's father. "He played well on the last nine holes and got out."

Carpenter's round Tuesday included birdies on holes 4, 5, 6 and 7. His first round also included three bogeys and a double-bogey.

On Wednesday, Carpenter had five birdies, five bogeys and a double-bogey.

"I knew Quentyn wasn't going to be happy with just being here," said Jack Carpenter. "He stayed with it and got through to the second day. Of the 21 teams that got here, there were 14 4A schools and we were the only 1A school. This is a pretty big deal for us."

Triton, which went through the regular season with an undefeated record, shot a school-record 303 as a team Tuesday, but missed the cut.

After completing an undefeated regular season, Warsaw also competed as a team Tuesday, and missed the cut by two strokes after shooting a 299.

Brebeuf Jesuit led by eight strokes after the first round and went on to win the state championship by six strokes over runner-up Evansville North.

En route to its first state championship in boys golf, Brebeuf shot a two-day total of 562.

Evansville North (568), Carmel (576), Floyd Central (577) and Hamilton Southeastern (584) rounded out the top five teams.

Avon junior Patrick Rodgers was the medalist, shooting a 67 on Tuesday and a 64 on Wednesday for a two-day total of 131. Rodgers beat runner-up Conner O'Neal, a senior from Carmel, by four strokes.
