BOURBON – Very little went well for Triton in its 41-29 high school boys basketball loss to Argos Thursday night in the Trojan Trench. The game was close for a while, but rather than going on one big run, the visiting Dragons methodically pulled away from the Trojans. Argos led by one point after a quarter, two at the half, and five after the third period. Triton then turned from a chilly shooting night to flat-out frozen, making just one shot from the field and no free throws in the fourth quarter. The Trojans made just 26 percent of their shots in the game (10 of 38). Argos also won the battle of the boards, outrebounding Triton 22-15. Three of Triton’s rebounds came in a single trip down the floor in the second quarter, and the Trojans had only three defensive rebounds in the game. But the Dragons were very efficient when they had the ball, missing just eight of 24 shots all night. Dragon junior Davon Miller came in averaging around 17 points a game, and left the Trench having scored a game-high 18 points against Triton. “Give them some credit, I thought they did a nice job defensively,” said Triton head coach Jason Groves. “They played well offensively. They executed and hit shots when they needed them. So it was a little bit of everything, kind of a perfect storm. “At the same time, I was disappointed in how we played and how we responded to things. I noticed early in the first quarter our body language after a missed free throw, things like that that we’ve played through. We did a nice job the last few games with stuff like that, and to go back to that was disappointing. I’m not sure why we’re not consistent, but this group hasn’t been. That’s the frustrating part.” Groves, who stayed at 199 wins in his career, noted his team needed to be stronger on a night where they had 12 offensive rebounds. “We didn’t shoot particularily well, but when we don’t shoot well we have to get on the boards and get offensive rebounds and get some put-backs,” he said. “When we did get offensive rebounds we got bumped and weren’t strong inside and we didn’t finish. So that’s on us.” Jarrett Kreft led Triton with 11 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Jordan Anderson and Zac Pitney had five points each. Now 11-6 overall, Triton returns to Hoosier North Athletic Conference play with a Saturday matinee at Caston.
