Triton Downs Bethany Christian 64-32

BOURBON -ÊIt wasn't pretty, but a win is a win.

When the Triton girls basketball team hosted Bethany Christian Monday, the game was anything but pretty. The Trojans came out on top 64-32, but they did not play the best game of the season to do so.

"Traditionally, Monday games are not the best for us," said Triton coach Mark Heeter. "Fortunately, we came out of this one with a win. Unfortunately we have games next Monday and the Monday after that."

The game started with a play that would preview the entire game. Triton gained possession on the tip-off and knocked the ball out of bounds.

"This game was sloppy for both teams," said Heeter. "I feel fortunate that we won despite the play tonight. We were more talented than they were, but I have to give Bethany Christian a lot of credit. They worked hard and hustled."

The Trojans recovered from that early mistake and jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter of play. Triton then caught Bethany Christian off guard when the team focused on a full-court defense throughout the first period. By the end of the quarter, the Trojans held a 18-11 lead.

Triton then increased its lead dramatically in the second quarter. The Trojans scored 16 points while allowing the Bruins to score just four total points in the stanza.

At the half, Triton held a hefty 34-20 lead. However, the Triton offense did not let up in the second half.

During the third quarter, Triton continued the offensive attack by scoring 20 points. Bethany Christian scored just eight points in the quarter.

In the end, the Trojans came out on top of the Bruins 64-32. The Triton squad not only doubled Bethany Christian's score, they also had two players with double-doubles. Betsy Salyer and Missy Nifong were both in double figures in scoring and in rebounding.

Salyer scored 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. She also contributed four assists. Missy Nifong added 13 points and 10 rebounds.

"Betsy had a good game tonight," said Heeter. "The girls got the ball to her so she could score. If the team had not gotten the ball inside to her, she would not have been able to score as easily."

The 3-1 Trojans hope to put the sloppy game of Monday night behind them when they host conference foe New Prairie Wednesday at 6 p.m.

"The game against New Prairie should be a good game," said Heeter. "They are a big conference opponent, and it should be an exciting game."
