BOURBON - It was quite anticlimactic, but the most exciting moment of the Triton track meet Thursday night was the final leg of the final race.
In the 1600 relay, the Trojans' Jeff Rupe made up a 100 meter deficit to give Triton its only relay victory of the night, boys or girls.
As it was, the win in the 1600 relay placed Triton one point behind Culver Military for third place. Jimtown ran away with the meet with 78 points, while CMA ended with 45. The Triton boys had been undefeated on the year at 3-0.
The Triton girls finished a distant third with 33 points. Jimtown placed second at 51 points, and the Culver Girls Academy ended with 72 points.
The boys started slowly with just six points through six events. But then Triton began to heat up. Bill Salyer and Mason McIntyre placed second and third in the 1600, and Josh Heck won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet to close the gap between the Trojans and CMA. In the 800, Salyer took second and McIntyre placed fourth to get to 25 points, 17 behind Culver.
Heck closed out the pole vault by jumping 12-6 to take first place, and Rupe took second in the 200. At that point, Triton trailed CMA by nine points with two strong events to go. McIntyre won the 3200 with a time of 10:39, but CMA placed third in the event to lock up second place. The final event was the 1600 relay, in which Triton closed out the scoring.
"We're young," boys coach Curt Kreft said. "We have about 14 sophomores. It's mainly just them getting confidence about themselves. We have a lot to learn."
Coach Kreft was quick to point out the positives for the team, though.
"Mason McIntyre ran four events," Kreft said. "He won the two mile, and had a good four events. Bill Salyer ran pretty good. He ran the 800 real well and was part of that relay team."
The girls stayed close early, as Emily Yankovich took second in the high jump, and the 3200 relay team placed second. However, depth hurt the team in the long run.
"We only have 12 girls," head coach Jason Hunter said. "We're still getting a lot of firsts and seconds, but what's going to kill us is the thirds and the fourths. I keep on telling them, it's just the beginning."
Melody Kuhn took the only first place for Triton, winning the 300 hurdles with a time of 53.44. She also placed second in the 100 low hurdles with a run of 17.25. The 400 relay team placed second, just behind Culver Girls Academy.
"Kuhn did an excellent job in the 300 hurdles, as well as the 100 meter hurdles," Hunter said. "Reghan Kreft was excellent for us, running four events, all of them distance. Lissa Bradley has been sick for about four days now, and she came back and did four events really well."
The Triton boys (3-2) will compete in the Warrior Relays at North Miami today at 5:30 p.m. The girls (2-5) will be at John Glenn next, along with Knox on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. The boys team will also compete there.
