BOURBON - Mike Chobanov, principal at Triton Junior-Senior High School, announced the school received the Indiana Chamber of Commerce's award of "Head of the Class."

Triton has been awarded this the last 10 out of 11 years. There are 10 schools from the state's 357 public schools to receive this distinction. The criterion is which schools have the highest level of academic achievements for the lowest amount of tax dollars. Chobanov commended the students, teachers and administration for the award.

The board approved the following recommendations for hire for the 2009-10 school years: Brett Swihart, boy's varsity and junior high assistant wrestling coach; Jeff Mellott, girl's varsity softball volunteer coach; and Matthew Arvesen, boys varsity and junior high wrestling volunteer assistant coach.

The board also approved Janet Barker as the business and finance director, Kris Berger as the transportation director, Gary Clarkson as the technical director and Rich Anders as the maintenance director.

The board approved the additional fundraiser of a Tupperware selling for the fifth-grade class to go to Camp Amigo. The camp is a two-day event and cost per student is $50. Students have participated in this in the past and want to continue the retreat.

On Dec. 1, Triton received their distribution for full-day kindergarten for the 2009-10 school years. The amount that Triton received was $79,791.35.

Superintendent Carl Hilling wants to see students continue to give back to the community. He expressed great approval in what has already been done.

The corporation raised $2,000 to help families have a wonderful Christmas, there is an ongoing coat drive, and students have been actively participating in filling the food shelves for the pantry.

The Triton Christmas program is Thursday, the all-school sing is Friday and the elementary school will host doughnuts with dad on Jan. 8.
