BOURBON – Triton School Board welcomed a room full of parents and students to their monthly board meeting Monday evening. Seven students were recognized for their academic achievements at the beginning of the meeting. School Board President Amy Middaugh awarded the students with a certificate of achievement because they scored a 700 or higher on their ISTEP tests during their previous school year. “We’re very proud of you,” Superintendent Dr. Donna Burroughs said. “Thank you for your good work, you can definitely go places.” On Nov. 10, there will be a public hearing for bonds for the bond project with Umbaugh & Associates. This will be an appropriation hearing. Burroughs said the balanced calendar “continues to be a conundrum” and will be discussed again next month. She said there has not been a vote on this new calendar, but next month she will be able to see where the other school systems stand on this issue. Burroughs also mentioned a community meeting Oct. 30. The topic of discussion is the war on public schools and what can be done to fight it. “We want to keep our public schools,” Burroughs said. “They are very valuable, and that’s the war we’re fighting now.” Triton Elementary School Principal Jeremy Riffle discussed some updates at the elementary school. He said the acuity assessment was given last week and at the end, they were able to see what the new ISTEP exam will be like. “[The new ISTEP exam] is going to be really difficult,” Riffle said. Riffle also said they are in the process of kicking off their service learning project. About 240 fifth- and sixth-grade and some high school students are going to be working with Feed My Starving Children. Triton Junior-Senior High School Principal Michael Chobanov was excited to announce that Wednesday they will have PSAT testing for 99 students. These students are sophomores and part of the junior class. Chobanov said this is “a good sign” for students wanting to further their education. The next school board meeting is scheduled for Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.
