Triton Accreditation Complete For 2000-2001

BOURBON - Triton School Superintendent Rex Roth said Monday Triton Junior-Senior High School has been accredited for the 2000-2001 school year.

The accreditation took place at a business meeting of the Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement in Chicago on April 3.

In a letter addressed to Triton Junior-Senior High School Principal Ted Chittum, the school was commended "for its efforts in providing for its students a quality program of education."

"We're always glad to get that report," Roth said.

In other business, the board:

• Approved the Triton High School chapter of Future Business Leaders of America to attend the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla., June 27 through July 3.

Students will participate in workshops, listen to guest speakers that pertain to success in a business atmosphere, attend motivational general sessions and compete in various events and sightseeing.

FBLA members Seth Bowers and Sara Boyer were present at the school board meeting to request approval for the trip.

"This year's been a good year for FBLA," Bowers told board members.

Boyer said seven students will attend the conference including herself, Bowers, Cassi McIntyre, Natasha Riewoldt, Ashlee Westafer, Kelly Whiteman and Jenna Thomas.

• Approved Jim Salisbury as a volunteer softball coach. Roth said the appointment was effective immediately.

• Approved purchasing a Ford truck and snowplow from Lemler & Sons for $6,300. Roth said the truck will probably be in at the end of this month.

• Approved moving Roth's retirement date from July 3 to June 30.

• Roth said a gate will be built on the northeast corner of the east side of the gym at the elementary school.

"We've had traffic going through there," Roth said. "It (gate) should be a good deterrent ... and people should understand they're not supposed to drive there."

• Chittum said today through Friday is an annual art show in the auditorium at the high school. He invited board members to stop by and see the exhibits. He also said an awards program will be May 25 at 6:30 p.m. in Cristo's Banquet Hall. The program is for students will all A's on their report cards, junior and senior academic medal winners and one representative from each department (such as the top math student, etc.).

"We're trying to elevate academics," Chittum said, "and we're doing it through a banquet."

• Triton Elementary School Principal Tom Bowers said kindergarten registration is today from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. He also said a PTO meeting is set for May 14. Fifth-grade students will perform and new officers will be elected.

• Janet Barker, corporation treasurer, said an open house will be held in honor of Roth for his retirement May 21 from 1:30 to 5 p.m. in the administration office, 100 Triton Drive, Bourbon. The community and staff are invited to attend.

Triton School Board members are: president Steve Blackford, vice president Steve Feldman, secretary Larry Lemler, Dave Shively and Kevin Boyer. Superintendent is Rex Roth. Corporation treasurer is Janet Barker.
