BOURBON -ÊA request for a senior trip to Chicago was granted by the Triton school board for a class trip to Chicago May 9.
Three Triton seniors - Tracey Bell, senior class president, Sara Boyer, vice president, and Seth Bowers, treasurer - said they'd rather visit a big city than an amusement park.
The cost is expected to be between $65-$85 per person.
In a poll of 72 seniors, 68 students said they would take the trip, 65 students would help with a fund-raiser and four said they wouldn't go.
Six chaperones were going, said Boyer.
Funds would be raised by selling tickets to a spaghetti or chili dinner.
With the number of students expected, a second charter bus would be needed, which would push the per-person cost closer to $85.
In other business, the board:
Heard from Susan Dietzel, of the Triton Teachers Association. She said she was very interested in reaching a settlement for a teachers' contract.
TTA will meet with a negotiator this week and she hopes for a "fair, agreeable and feasible" contract.
"We don't plan to drag this out," she said.
Said they didn't know the specific day when drug searches might take place.
After asking if the searches were needed, superintendent Ted Chittum said, "A drug problem is a societal problem. Our kids are a cross-section of society."
"You do the best you can to deter everything," said Glenn Weidner, Triton Jr./Sr. high school principal.
Marshall County Sheriff's Department offered the service to the corporation. The searches would be practice and a drill for the department's police dog, according to the board.
