Trench art is commonly defined as any decorative item made by soldiers, prisoners of war or civilians, where the manufacture is directly linked to armed conflict or its consequences.
Although the practice flourished during World War I, the term ‘trench art’ is also used to describe souvenirs manufactured by service personnel during any war.
Many items of trench art are recycled battlefield debris, notably artillery shell cases, often decorated. Equally ingenious are talismanic and sweet heart jewelry, embroideries, and items carved from stone, bone, and wood.
Long ignored, trench art revels a lost world of the Great War and its aftermath. Jessie Bower from the Fort Wayne Museum of Art will be presenting this program. Bower will leave some of the pieces for viewing in the glass case across from circulation.
