Training Schedule Released For Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program

Posted
The William P. Gordon Institute for Enterprise Development and the United Way of Kosciusko County are seeking interested and qualified volunteers.

The volunteers will play a vital role in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, which helps working families take advantage of all tax credits for which they are eligible, including earned income tax credit, child tax credits and education credits.

This program not only assists the individual family, but also increases tax dollars in the county. However, the program depends on the participation of community volunteers.

On Oct. 30 from 9 a.m until noon, the Robert and Frances Gordon Student Recreation Center on the Grace College campus will host a program overview. This will allow interested community members to come and learn about the different volunteer opportunities and ask any questions regarding the program.

"The VITA program is a platform for our local volunteers to come together for a much-needed economic boost for a segment in our community" said Tim Ziebarth, director of the William P. Gordon Institute.

Those interested in serving in quality control or as preparers are required to pass an IRS issued electronic exam in order to be certified. A passing score is 80 percent. Potential volunteers will be able to take the exam at their own convenience after it is made available in November.

All volunteers will be required to attend the all-volunteer orientation Jan. 8. During this orientation, volunteers will learn about the logistical details and execution of the VITAprogram.

Free IRS training will be provided with those who do not yet feel familiar enough with the tax codes and filing procedures. To learn more about the training schedule, visit www.grace.edu/institute or contact Tim Ziebarth at tjziebarth@grace.edu, 574-372-5100, Ext. 6129.
