A southbound Norfolk Southern train struck a parked car in the 100 block of South Hickory Street in Warsaw Wednesday afternoon, leaving several downtown-area crossings closed for two hours.
The collision was south of East Center Street and reported at 3:22 p.m.
The train was going 24 mph when it collided with the car, according to a Warsaw Police Department accident report.
The man who had parked the car was inside a residence at 111 S. Hickory St. at the time of the collision. The accident report does not identify the man, who said he thought he had parked far enough away from the tracks to avoid getting the car hit.
The train travels down the center of Hickory Street for two blocks, between East Main and East Market streets. There are several residences and offices along the east side of Hickory Street.
Trains require a minimum of 4 feet of side clearance from the nearest rail.
No one was hurt in the accident, and the crossings at Main, Center and Market streets and Winona Avenue were cleared by 5:30 p.m.
The pavement and rails on Hickory Street were recently replaced as part of an extensive project that ran from Claypool to a rail junction north of Milford.
4:31 p.m. UPDATE: Warsaw Police Chief Scott Whitaker said Roger Rollins, 71, Anchorage Road, Warsaw, owned the 1982 Chevrolet C-10 pickup struck by the train. Rollins parked in a no-parking zone where barricades from recent construction were sitting. He parked at an angle in front of 111 S. Hickory, where he was visiting a friend, and the train struck the corner of the truck.
