Posted
What started as a traffic stop ended with two area men being arrested after a police pursuit.

At 2:45 a.m. Sunday, Warsaw Police Department officer Joel Beam attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding on Zimmer Lane. The driver, Timothy Lee Burkett Jr., 31, of 11173 Ind. 13, North Manchester, did stop on Zimmer Road, but then took off again.

Burkett fled down Ind. 25 toward the area known as Devil's Backbone. Burkett stopped his vehicle and exited on foot, heading south.

A passenger in the vehicle, Jeremiah Carl Whetstone, 31, of 10437 Ind. 15, Silver Lake, ran north.

Beam's K-9 partner, Buddy, apprehended Whetstone. Burkett ran for more than a half mile before the dog also apprehended him.

Burkett was charged with resisting arrest/fleeing law enforcement, and cruelty to a law enforcement animal, for striking Buddy, as well as a charge of driving while intoxicated.

Whetstone was charged with public intoxication, resisting arrest/fleeing law enforcement and on a warrant out of Huntington County for probation violation.

Both were treated at Kosciusko Community Hospital for bites sustained from the K-9 during their apprehension.

Burkett was booked into Kosciusko County Jail on a $2,000 bond, and Whetstone was booked on a $500 bond.
