Friday afternoon during a routine traffic stop, Warsaw Police Department patrol officer R.J. Nethaway found an interesting discovery.
Nethaway was alerted to signs that Scott Edward Reiter, 63, of 3014 Frontage Road, room 228, Warsaw, had methamphetamine in his vehicle. Reiter was charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of a controlled substance, both Class D felonies.
At 11:45 p.m., Nethaway observed a blue Ford Explorer with expired registration westbound on U.S. 30. During Nethaway’s conversation with Reiter, Nethaway was informed that Reiter did not have his 2011 registration because it had been seized by law enforcement on a previous search of his vehicle. When asked why the vehicle was searched, Reiter responded that they searched his vehicle for methamphetamine. In that search law enforcement found precursors to methamphetamine.
Nethaway then asked Reiter if he could search his vehicle. Reiter agreed. During the search Nethaway found two purses and a large stack of women’s clothing, which Reiter said belonged to his girlfriend.
Upon further investigation, Nethaway found a Mentos chewing gum container between the driver’s seat and center console. When he opened the container he found 14 round green pills, which were later identified as Clonazepam, a Schedule III narcotic.
After finding the Clonazepam, Nethaway lifted the cup holder and found coffee filters. When Nethaway asked Reiter, Reiter said the filters contained methamphetamine and he was taking them to his lawyer because they were evidence that he did not commit a prior crime.
Nethaway continued to search the vehicle, and later found a cold pack and a partial canister of Coleman camping fuel, both precursors to methamphetamine.
Reiter also was given citations for expired registration and covering the vehicle vehicle identification number.
Reiter was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 12:28 a.m. Saturday on a $2,000 bond. He was released this morning.
