Traditional Arts Indiana Launches Traveling Exhibit

Posted
Beginning in March, Traditional Arts Indiana will install eight exhibit panels across the state depicting the traditional expressions and folklife of Indiana.

The traveling panels will each spend two months at participating public libraries and museums and then rotate to other sites.Visually appealing, with colorful photographs and bold texts, the panels tell a story of individuals and communities who draw meaning and strength from their work, their creativity and their sense of connection to a relevant past. They focus on different aspects of regional culture including domestic arts, small businesses and traditional occupations. They also showcase the programs offered by Traditional Arts Indiana, such as the Indiana Apprenticeship Program and Indiana State Fair Masters.

Warsaw Community Public Library is one of the participating libraries in this unique exhibit and is currently displaying the traveling panel, "Egg Decorating: Pysanki and Cascarones," which showcases egg-decorating traditions. The panel will be exhibited throughout March and April and is on display on the second floor near the reference desk.

Egg decorating is known as an art form and is practiced in many ways around the world. Pysanki is Ukranian art where designs are created on empty eggs by repeatedly applying melted beeswax with a tool called a kystka and then dipping the eggs into dyes. The wax is then melted over a flame to reveal hidden designs. Plan a visit to WCPL and also learn about Cascarones, a Mexican egg-decorating tradition.

Funding for this project comes from Traditional Arts Indiana, The Indiana Arts Commission, Indiana University and the National Endowment for the Arts.
