Township Trustees

Posted

Editor, Times-Union:
The Ink Free News recently published an article listing all of the township trustees and contact information. We hope the trustees are ready to help during the government shutdown as stated. From the public information available, many of the smaller township trustee offices do not have regular office hours, so it is important to contact them by phone or email first.
Unfortunately, based on the public Information posted on the Indiana Gateway for Governmental Units for the year 2024 (//gateway.ifionline.org/report_builder/Default.aspx), the Kosciusko townships paid out a total of $203,496 in township assistance to residents. The township trustees, clerks, an investigator, and board members were paid a total of $415,605. At the end of 2024, the ending balance in all the townships’ assistance funds was $1,712,305. This was a decrease of over $61,000 from the 2024 beginning balance. A big component of the decrease was caused by a transfer of over $79,000 from Plain Township’s township assistance fund to other Plain Township funds. In addition to the balance in the township assistance funds, some townships also have a balance in a rainy day fund.
We sincerely hope that the township trustees and staff will use their existing funds to help residents in need due to the pause of SNAP benefits and other layoffs, in addition to the rising costs of health care, housing, utilities and other necessities.
