Most of us know that bigger government does not work and our founding fathers wanted us to be represented at all levels of government.
Currently there is legislation (HB1181 and SB240) to eliminate Township Boards and make the governing body of each Township the County Council.
This legislation is at the conference committee point.
At this stage the committee meets to reconcile differences, if members agree the bill returns to the Chamber for a final vote. The Council is made up of representatives of each area of the county.
Township Boards are officials elected by you.
They reside and are active in their Townships and they know the needs of their Townships.
The Council's job is to budget the County's money, BUT, do they really know the needs of each Township. When the State mandated the Council make non-binding recommendations on Townships, Libraries, etc., budgets they requested for themselves a salary increase because of the added workload of just reviewing those budgets.
This bill will not save taxpayers money.
It only reduces the number of local officials elected by you. There may still be time to contact your legislators to let them know that Township Board members are needed and they represent the people that elect them.
