WINONA LAKE -ÊGrace College's men's basketball team trailed for most of its 1999-2000 opener, but a big second half by sharpshooter Ben Tonagel bailed the Lancers out to give them the 74-71 Friday win over the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
Tonagel scored 21 points, 17 of which came on the second half. After going 0 for 2 behind the three-point line in the first half, Tonagel sank 5 of 6 three-pointers in the second half. Tonagel then sealed the win by making two free throws with five seconds left.
The game was one of two played in Grace College's Optimist Tip-Off Tournament. Purdue-Calumet (1-0) beat Spring Arbor (0-1) 58-57 in the first game.
Grace trailed by as many as 13 at 26-13 midway through the first half, but the Lancers closed the deficit to 33-31 at halftime. The Wolves (0-2) led the Lancers (1-0) throughout much of the second half, but Tonagel was too much, and the Lancers came away with the win.
The Wolves hurt themselves in two categories, free throws and rebounding. The Lancers outrebounded the Wolves 47-31. Michigan-Dearborn attempted 24 free throws and hit but 12.
Lancer forward Lawrence Burnett added 16 points and seven rebounds, while forwards Teryck Taylor and Dan Scharlach each finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Doug Herriman scored 21 for Michigan-Dearborn.
Grace faces Purdue-Calumet in the championship game at 3 p.m. today. Spring Arbor meets Michigan-Dearborn in the 1 p.m. consolation game.
