Joseph Baranowski, of Warsaw, returned recently from a trip to Poland, where he visited the tomb of this county’s namesake, Thaddeus Kosciuszko. The tomb is in Wawel Cathedral in Krakow, Poland. Kosciuszko was a hero of Poland and America. With a military background, he came to America to assist in the Revolutionary War against the British. He became friends with George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and helped build the military fortification at West Point. For his service to America, Kosciuszko was awarded U.S. citizenship. Indiana officials were impressed by Kosciuszko so much that this county’s forefathers, including John B. Chapman, named the county for him. The county seat was named Warsaw. Photo provided.
